"Eating as we know is a mundane activity. But the art of mindfulness makes it a miracle," dharmacharya Shantum Seth told top guns at Business Today's MindRush conclave on Saturday. Seth, who was talking on mindful eating, started off with an anecdote to show the lack of control individuals have on their lives.
"There was a zen story that a man was riding a horse and another man asks, 'Where are you going'? The man said, 'I don't know, ask the horse'. It's very much the life of many of us. Whether it is fame, money or ambition which is driving us, we don't even have the reins in our hands," said Seth, adding that the horse is getting faster with technology. "We don't even know how to handle it."
FULL COVERAGE:MINDRUSH 2013Seth also said stress levels were increasing immensely. He said that according to the World Health Organization (WHO), stress is the highest cause of disease and disability today. "Nearly 121 million people are affected by it," he added.
Seth said the problems people are facing today have been existed for ages. "Buddha was telling people the same thing 2,500 years ago, that you have got problems with relationships, stress levels and anger. He gave a sutra called the satipatthana, which is based on the mindfulness of body and feelings."
"Buddha was actually one of the most successful CEOs in the world. He started an organisation which had negotiation and conflict resolution and models that helped organisation to work. It's important to recognise that it's an Indian model. Now the model is emulated around the world and we have missed the boat. We are missing the boat again. We are getting interested in these things because the West is showing interest," said Seth.
