Apple likely to bring in-display Touch ID on future iPhones

Previously, there have been several reports about the technology finding place on iPhones.

Highlights

  • Apple is tipped to launch new iPhones with under-display fingerprint scanner.
  • These phones could also keep the FaceID technology.
  • iPhones with under-display tech could come as early as next year.

Under-display fingerprint readers have become common on Android phones across multiple budget segments, but Apple still appears shy of bringing the technology to its flagship iPhones. But it appears this could change really quickly.

This is according to the noted tipster, @L0vetodream, who claims that Apple continues to work on the technology as Apple still has plans for an iPhone with an under-the-screen Touch ID sensor in the future. While he gives no timeline on when the feature could make its way to iPhones, the suggestion is that the technology could possibly find a place on iPhones in the coming year or two.

Earlier, rumors of a fingerprint sensor embedded in an iPhone display had been seen before the launch of the iPhone X. But as it turns out, Apple opted for Face ID on the phone, and since then we've continued to wait for Apple to finally bring the technology to its phones.

In the past, we've also seen patent applications about Apple using an in-display fingerprint scanner on its phones. There are also supply chain reports that suggest key Apple suppliers may be preparing to ship under-the-screen fingerprint recognition technology.

However, the biggest hint that we could actually get an iPhone with a fingerprint scanner soon has been from Ming-Chi Kuo who had claimed that Apple would release at least one iPhone with an under-display fingerprint reader in 2021. As such, it is quite possible that the iPhone 13 will come out as an upgrade over the iPhone 12 with its inclusion of not just an in-display fingerprint scanner but also FaceID.

Apart from this, we don't really know much about the iPhone 13. But leaks in the past have claimed some interesting things about the phone. @UniverseIce has suggested that the iPhone 13 would be thinner than the 12 but would otherwise keep the same form factor as previous iPhones.

DSCC founder and display analyst Ross Young on the other hand has said that the iPhone 13 lineup would come with integrated touch OLED screens, 120Hz ProMotion displays, Time-of-Flight (ToF) selfie cameras for touchless gesture navigation, and up to 1.9m triple rear cams.
