Larsen & Toubro, also known as L&T, is a leading Indian conglomerate. The firm is primarily engaged in EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) projects, hi-tech manufacturing and services. The firm is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra and it operates in over 50 countries. L&T has a rich history that dates back to the pre-Indian independence era. Danish engineers, Henning Holck Larsen and Soren Kristian Toubro had come to India before the start of World War 2. A year after the war ended Larsen and Toubro founded L&T and opened a small office in Mumbai. Initially, L&T’s sole focus was on civil engineering projects such as dams, roads and bridges. As the years passed, L&T expanded into manufacturing machinery and equipment for multiple industries like cement, paper and chemical plants. Larsen & Toubro became a public limited company in 1950. A section of L&T’s Bombay office shifted to ICI House in Ballard Estate in 1956. L&T would later buy the building and rename it as L&T House which serves as the current headquarters of the firm. Engineering Construction Corporation (ECC) transformed into a wholly-owned subsidiary of L&T in 1959. Later, ECC would merge with L&T and would become L&T’s ECC—Engineering Construction & Contracts Division. In 1996, L&T entered the information technology sector after it founded L&T Information Technology Ltd as a wholly owned subsidiary. L&T acquired IT firm Mindtree in 2019 and in 2022 it merged Mindtree with L&T Infotech to form LTIMindtree.

Product and services 

L&T is a giant in the field of engineering and construction in India. The firm takes on large infrastructure projects including highways, expressways, ports, airports and railways. L&T also develops power plants and water treatment facilities. L&T has a construction and mining equipment business. It manufactures, distributes and provides after-sales support for construction and mining equipment. L&T is also a key player in the Indian defence and aerospace industry. The company offers a wide variety of products and services such as missile systems, radars, avionics and defence electronics. L&T through its subsidiary, L&T Finance has diversified into financial services. L&T provides a range of technology and software services through its subsidiary, L&T Infotech which was merged with IT firm Mindtree in 2022 to form LTIMindtree. L&T also offers electrical and electronic products. L&T also has a strong presence in the heavy engineering sector.

Listing 

In 1950, L&T became a public company. L&T was listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in 1952. L&T is listed on a number of other Indian stock exchanges like NSE, Calcutta Stock Exchange, Delhi Stock Exchange etc. L&T is a part of multiple indices like Nifty 50, Nifty 500, S&P BSE Sensex 50 etc.
